The First Korean Congress was convened by Philip Jaisohn in Philadelphia from April 14 to 16, 1919 in the Little Theater at 17th and Delancey Streets. This was a reaction to the March 1st Movement, one of the earliest public displays of Korea's peaceful demonstration during Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945.

Join us for a three-part lecture series co-hosted alongside our partners at the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation at the University of Pennsylvania to learn more about the history of Dr. Philip Jaisohn and the First Korean Congress (By Dr. Juyoung Lee - Moon Family Postdoctoral Fellow in Korean Studies), Early Korean American Literature (By Dr. Josephine Park - Associate Dean for Arts and Letters at the School of Arts and Sciences), and a special discussion by KSA (Korean Student Association) about the Korean American experience at the University of Pennsylvania. The lecture will be followed by a commemorative march from Plays & Players Theatre to Independence Hall.
