North Korea: An Historical Perspective
 
North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missiles programs continue to capture the headlines. For sure, understanding the current situation demands consideration of complex international relations within East Asia and America’s security interests in the region. Regrettably, the mainstream U.S. news media coverage tends to reinforce an oversimplified picture of main actors: North Korea as the evil one supported by China, also bad for bullying America’s ally and the good guy, Japan—with South Korea lost somewhere in the middle. Looking beyond the headlines, the speaker will assess North Korea’s place in America’s strategic thinking and the future prospect.
