Friday, November 11, 2011 (All day) to Saturday, November 12, 2011 (All day)

Irvine Auditorium and Houston Hall

Organized by Dr. Saeyoung Park, Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Pennsylvania

From individuals tagging graffiti to mass candlelight vigils, from popular remembrances of the Korean War to ritual observances at monuments, the so-called ‘public space’ has been fertile ground for Koreans to present their visions of the past, present, and future. This conference provides an opportunity to reassess and reconfigure existing frameworks regarding public action (by individuals and groups) by inviting papers that advance our understanding of the role of public space in Korean society and culture.  This conference is made possible with funding from the Academy of Korean Studies, as well as the generous support of Dr. Eugene Y. Park, the James Joo-Jin Kim Korean Studies Program and the Center for East Asian Studies at U. of Pennsylvania.  The organizers are Nicholas Harkness (Harvard U.) and Saeyoung Park (U. of Pennsylvania).

There is no registration charge, but conference meal tickets are available for attendees.  A set-menu lunch will be held at San Kee on 12.30pm, 11/12 for $23.  A carte fixe dinner will take place at Hanwool on 11/12 at 6pm.  Tickets for dinner are $25.  Drinks are not included in either ticket.  It is not required to purchase either or both lunch and dinner tickets in order to participate in the conference.   Tickets can be paid for via check or in cash.  Please email the Kim Program assistant, Jooyeon Hahm, at kim-pks@sas.upenn.edu for a reservation and for further details.  Meal tickets must be reserved on the day of rsvp and cannot be purchased at the conference as headcounts must be provided to restaurants ahead of time.
