    The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies is pleased to announce the Graduate Fellow Award, aimed at students who are involved in the study of Korea and interested in active participation in the university’s Korean studies program. Fellows will be selected on the basis of academic merits and demonstrated interest in Korean studies. Applicants for this one-year award should be full-time graduate students including MA and Ph.D students.

    The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies is pleased to announce the Undergraduate Fellow Award, aimed at students who are involved in the study of Korea and interested in active participation in the university’s Korean Studies program. The Kim Center will recruit up to five (5) Undergraduate Fellows for the 2024–2025 academic year. Fellows will be selected on the basis of academic merits and demonstrated interest in Korean Studies.

  • Course Development Grants 2024-2025

    Funded by the AKS (Academy of Korean Studies), the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies will award grants of $1,000 to support members of the University of Pennsylvania faculty, lecturers, and graduate students for the development of new courses or the significant revision of existing courses related to Korea. The proposed course can be Korea-focused or comparative with substantial coverage of Korea. An additional $1,000 will be awarded upon the successful completion of the course. The grant will be dispersed as additional pay.

    The faculty and students from the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies participate in an international conference on Korean Studies hosted by the College of Humanities at Seoul National University from December 15, 2023 to December 17, 2023.

  • Now Accepting 2024-25 Moon Family Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications

    The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania announces a Moon Family Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2024–25 academic year. The postdoctoral fellowship is open to scholars whose research and teaching focus on Korea in the humanities (art, cinema, history, literature, music, philosophy, religion, theater, and the like). The fellowship will cover the 12-month period between August 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025 and provide a stipend of $65,000 as well as conference travel funds up to $2,000.

  • Now Accepting 2024-25 AKS Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications

    The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for its 2024-2025 Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) Postdoctoral Fellowship. The postdoctoral fellowship is open to scholars whose research and teaching focus on contemporary Korea in the social sciences broadly defined (e.g., anthropology, communication, economics, education, geography, political science, sociology, and other related disciplines).

  • Call for Papers: 4th Korean Studies Young Scholars (KSYS) Graduate Student Conference

    The James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is pleased to announce the 4th KSYS Graduate Student Conference to be held on March 1st–2nd, 2024 at Penn. The conference will begin with lunch on March 1, 2024 and will be held all day March 2, ending with the conference dinner.
